Clifton Hampden is a peaceful, picturesque village on the River Thames, just five miles from Abingdon. The village, noted in the 1885 Dictionary of the Thames by Charles Dickens' son, is home to St. Michael and All Angels Church, built in the 13th century and later redesigned by George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century. The village’s name comes from Old English, meaning "town on a cliff." Known for its charming 17th-century thatched cottages, Clifton Hampden has long been admired for its beauty, with Charles Dickens Jr. and Jerome K. Jerome both describing it as a quaint, flower-filled haven. This peaceful village still retains its charm, especially in the summer.
